Everything You Need to Know
When you think of a lumber yard, what do you think of? Decking, fencing, construction lumber, and that’s it? Most lumber yards surprisingly actually carry a wide array of products that aren’t just centered around decking, fencing, and structural lumber. You will often find lumber yards that carry accent pieces such as paints, stains, railings, lighting accents, reclaimed wood, and specialty products such as granite, marble, quartzite, and more. Lumber yards aren’t as specific to just lumber anymore, most have variety while some are still strictly lumber.
A few things can determine what kinds of products a lumber yard will carry like their location, client base, and how long they have been in business. The longer a business is up and running the more opportunity they have to get their hands on other specialty products to bring sales up.
Let’s Touch on the Basics that
Most Lumber Yards Carry
Decking
This is a general item that most lumber yards, no matter how big or small, will carry. What will vary is what kinds of decking they carry such as natural wood decking, composite, or both. There are also many kinds of natural wood decking from cedar, redwood and more that one lumber yard could carry. When it comes to composite decking, most lumber yards carry different brands such as Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon.
Fencing
Fencing is a product that will vary depending on the lumber yard and the types of fencing that they will offer from composite, vinyl, aluminum, natural wood, split rail, and ranch rail.
Flooring
Some different options of flooring that a lumber yard can offer will be dependent on the company and what they offer, but hardwood flooring is one of the most common types of flooring that is offered and sold.
Siding
Most lumber yards will carry traditional wood siding such as tongue and groove and shiplap, but as for the specialty sidings like log lap and channel rustic, that offering will depend on the company.

Out of State Delivery
If you are shopping out of state or come across us and live in another state, don’t worry! We offer out of state delivery for bulk orders. There are just a few things we want you to know regarding us and our out of state delivery.
While we offer delivery, because we buy directly from the mill, we don’t have the ability to give you an exact delivery date on some orders. Now, when we deliver products there must be a forklift on site and available for us to use when we deliver. Also, something to be aware of is when the truck arrives at the delivery location you must be prepared for a live unload. We do not do trailer drop offs to avoid any issues with delivery and product liability. If there are any issues with the product upon or after delivery, we must be notified by the 5th day following delivery in order to process the claim. We also need a written statement on what happened and note the damage that has occurred.
Here is a basic chart of our delivery fees for popular locations we usually deliver to. Take note that these are for bulk delivery fees only and if you have any questions in regards to fees or basic delivery within state, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
If you have a smaller order that you want quoted for delivery out of state, give us a call and we can give you a custom freight quote.

How do we care about our community?
What brands do we carry?
We supply and partner with several different brands of decking, fencing, siding and more. Here is a list of the brands we carry:
- Trex
- TimberTech
- Fiberon
- Fortress
- Evergrain
- Green Bay Decking
The above brands are our main composite decking brands. Here is the list of suppliers that we work closely with for a variety of all our products.
- Weyerhaeuser
- Hampton Lumber
- Blue Linx Corporation
- Redwood Empire
- Humboldt Redwood
- Allweather Wood
- Fasten Master
- Boise Cascade
- Penofin
- Wild Hog Railing
- And many more
We have made it a very important goal of ours to build relationships with these suppliers not just by selling their product, but by involving them in the community and getting their name out there.
Now let’s dive into each product we carry and all the different characteristics of each one.
Decking
We carry a few different types of decking so our clients have many options to choose from and can be assured that they will find what they are looking for.
We are mostly known for our traditional wood decking. We stock cedar and redwood.
Why are cedar and redwood some of our top picks? Well, they are both extremely durable and hold up well in situations where they are exposed to the elements of weather. Both are very easy to work with and keep up on. Check out our page on Redwood and Cedar for more information!
Next is the exotic hardwoods- We stock Ipe, Garapa, Mahogany, Red Balau and Tigerwood. These products are highly sought out for because of their incredible beauty and vibrant coloring. They are also extremely durable and sustainable, which makes them the ultimate decking building material. While they are a little pricier, we promise the benefits are more than worth the money spent.
How are exotic hardwoods different from other decking materials?
All exotic hardwoods have a beauty that is unable to be matched. The distinctive grains, knots, and the colorations are incredible and breathtaking. They are also extremely durable and more dense than other decking products, which means they will last long and will likely need to be repaired less. These woods are perfect for areas that endure a high amount of foot traffic and are exposed to furniture, grills, and pets. Lastly, every piece of exotic hardwood is extremely high quality and picked only from the best lumber supply.
Are exotic hardwoods hard to work with?
No, they aren’t if you have the correct tools. Many people choose to use exotic hardwoods rather than traditional softer woods because of the beauty, durability, and vibrant colors offered through exotic hardwoods.
Does the cost go up because we import our exotic woods?
Even with the freight costs being increased, exotic hardwood is still cheaper than composite decking for example.
Lastly, we have our composite decking lines from Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon, Fortress, and Evergrain. All of these brands have several different lines of composite decking, each with their own characteristics of color, profile, and look. We choose these brands because they are affordable and among the higher quality composite decking lines on the market. Check out their pages to learn more!
Railing
When it comes to building a deck, you will need to add a railing without a doubt. This adds safety and security which every home needs, plus it helps the deck look better once completed. We carry railing lines from the same brands we offer composite decking through. We do this so your railing will match the brand your deck is from and so will the style. Most of these brands have specific lines of decking and railings that go together and enhance the overall look of the deck.
Fencing
When it comes to our fencing, this is an area that we take pride in. We offer four different kinds of fencing- here they are:
Our privacy fencing is mainly cedar and comes in several different sizes and heights with our most popular being the standard sizes of 1x4x6 and 1x6x6 cedar pickets. We only carry cedar in stock because cedar is the most durable and long-lasting type of wood to be used in fencing. Cedar does great in Colorado and adapts to the climate its being built in very easily. We offer several different styles of pickets from gothic, gothic blunt, square edge, dog ear and more.
Next is Split Rail Fence. Our split rail fencing is brought in directly from the mill, which means it is a better quality with a more affordable price than big box stores. The four main reasons why we recommend a split rail fence in certain circumstances is because of how affordable it is and how long lasting it is once installed. It is also very easy to install and doesn’t require a lot of labor, which can deter some people. Split rail fencing is also a great way to give your home a rustic appearance. At the end of the day, we offer more of a variety compared to Home Depot and our rails are rated at a more affordable price and higher quality, since we cut out the middleman and order directly from the mill.
Finally, we have ranch rail fencing. This type of fencing is also known as horse fence, farm fence, field fencing, or board fence. This is a great alternative if you are wanting the look of a split rail fence but in a cleaner version. Ranch rail fence, just like with split rail fence is very affordable, looks great, is easy to install and lasts a long time. You will normally see ranch rail in a two, three, or four rail system with posts that can be 4×4, 4×6, or 6×6. As for the rails, the cedar boards are normally 2×6 or 2×8. You can install ranch rail in many ways which makes it easy to customize your fence to your liking.
Siding
Siding is one of our main specialties as a lumber yard. We carry several different types of siding that will fit any homeowners wants and needs. Our variety allows us to be able to provide our customers with options to fit their style needs and wants. If they aren’t sure what they are looking for, we also have a lot of samples at the customer’s disposal. We offer shiplap, tongue and groove, channel rustic, bevel, log lap, cedar shake shingles, and LP Smartside. In addition to our traditional wood siding, we also offer LP Smartside in options like lap siding, panel siding, trim and fascia, vertical siding, soffit, cedar shakes, and perfection shingles. When it comes time to choose your siding, you are sure to find exactly what you’re looking for, given all of the options open to you. Each type of siding has their own characteristics that set them aside from one another. Check out the pages on our webpage to learn more about each kind.
Now that we have dove into all of our products, the different brands we work with, and our suppliers- now you know the ins and out of RMFP as a specialty lumber yard. However, this is just the surface level of the products we offer. Siding, decking and fencing are our specialties, but not our only products. We also have lines of timbers, beams, pergolas, reclaimed wood, beetle kill, and even granite. Over the years of serving our customers in Colorado, we have expanded our outlook on the specialty building materials industry and opened doors to new products that are very popular among the contractors, designers, and homeowners we work with.
At Rocky Mountain Forest Products, we take pride in serving our customers to keep them coming back by building relationships with them and offering them products that are a higher quality and at a more affordable price than our competitors.
