Horse Fence | Farm Fence | Ranch Rail Fencing

A Ranch Rail fence, also known as Horse Fence, Farm Fence, Field Fencing or Board Fence, is becoming much more popular throughout the mid-west. Ranch Rail fences look equally at home in city neighborhoods, country mountain settings, or large farms to keep livestock and pets within their property borders. A ranch rail fence will make you feel like you’re really in the countryside, enjoying the little things in life, while still keeping a modern vibe. The design of these fences are, as the name suggests, perfect for ranch or farm areas because they can keep livestock in and predators out. By using them to keep your kids in the yard, would work just as well. Ranch rail fencing provide a good alternative to a typical privacy fence, yet will look much cleaner and modern than a split rail fence.

A typical Ranch Rail, two, three or four rail system, will typically be made with  4×4, 4×6 or 6×6 cedar posts and nominal 2×6 or 2×8 cedar boards for its rails. We keep all of these in stock and can also supply weld wire that can be attached to your fence to keep small pets or animals in and predators out. Ranch rail fences also have more design options than split rail because split rail fence posts come with pre-drilled holes, thus limiting your creative side.

Benefits of Ranch Rail Fencing (Field Fencing):

The average cost, depending on where you live and what materials you purchase, will be anywhere from $12-20 per linear foot, when professionally installed. If you do the fence yourself, it could cost around $8-12 per linear foot. The average linear feet needed for a project is approximately 150 linear feet. If you have the fence professionally installed, you should factor installation costs to be about 25% of the total job.

Most people choose cedar for fencing projects because of it’s durability and affordability. No nails, fence staples, or other materials are needed for a split rail fence, which helps to keep the cost low.

Fencing Questions

How long does it take to install a Ranch Rail fence compared to a Split Rail Fence?

The time to install a fence really depends on the size of project and what style of Ranch Rail fence you prefer. A Split Rail fence has standard posts with standard rails, whereas a Ranch Rail can have a 2, 3, 4, or more planks (or rails) and can crisscross or sit straight across. You have more design control with a Ranch Rail versus a Split Rail, so the time that it takes to install is all determined case by case.

Does a Ranch Rail Fence cost more than a Split Rail Fence or an Post and Dowel Fence?

It really depends on the dimension of lumber being used and the complexity of the design. If you are looking for the least expensive rail fence possible, speak with one of our fence specialists and they can help you choose materials that will keep the overall costs down.

Do I get more options with Ranch Rail than with Split Rail or Post and Dowel Fences?

Yes, you get more options when it comes to Ranch Rail versus other designs. Split Rail and Post & Dowel fences limit you to designs that utilize the pre-drilled holes in the posts. A ranch rail fence on the other hand offers you nearly unlimited design possibilities.
