Curb appeal is one of the most important things when it comes to designing your home and attracting attention. When you drive through neighborhoods, what is the first thing you notice? Someone’s fence? Their landscaping? The color of their house? There are many different attributes to a house that can catch your eye and make you look at a house for longer than a split second. Most homeowners don’t think about their homes curb appeal unless they are selling their home, but in reality, you don’t have to be selling your home to care about your curb appeal. Your home is something you want to be proud of and is a place that you want visitors and to host get togethers. With this in mind, we wanted to create a list that makes improving curb appeal simple and easy to understand.

Improving Curb Appeal with Paint

This one is a very general and basic thing you can do. Most homeowners keep up on their exterior paint, but there are ways you can accent your home with pops of unique colors. Your front door is often something that many people don’t think about painting a crazy color to accent your home. Two popular colors that are often used are red to accent a light or dark grey house, or a bright blue to accent light cream or grey color. Of course, there are endless options when it comes to the colors you can paint your front door, these are just a few examples. You can also paint the trim around your home to enhance the color. Painting the exterior of your home is a great step to take to accentuate the exterior of your home.

Adding subtle decorations is also a good way to make your home look “complete” with design. If you have a front porch, you should add some seating like two rocking chairs and a table and décor such as decorating your front door with a wreath or holiday décor, and a welcome mat.

Your landscaping is one of the most important things when it comes to the exterior of your home. If your home’s front yard is covered in dirt, it will look like your home is still under construction and not completed. If your yard is full of green grass, trees, bushes, and flowers- your home will look complete and clean!

Fencing for Improving Curb Appeal

Along with your landscaping, adding a fence to your home that is installed and built properly will also enhance the curb appeal of your home and increase the value. Typically, a front yard doesn’t have a fence like a privacy fence in your backyard, but you can still accent your home with a front fence. A split rail fence is a style of fencing that will work in the front or back of your house and will give your home a completed look. A split rail fence is ideal for bordering your property line and keeping strangers from coming onto your property. A split rail fence allows you to have some security while also not feeling as blocked out like a privacy fence. The great thing about a split rail fence is that you can carry it throughout your home into the backyard if you want the whole house to be bordered and secured. If you have smaller animals and kiddos you need to keep safe, add some weld wire between the rails so you can still enjoy the benefits of split rail and keep your family safe.

Front Porch

Build a small front porch to give your home a classic, American dream look and feel to it. This is an easy way to enhance the curb appeal of your home while also adding value to it just like you would by adding a fence. If you have a front porch added onto your home, not only does it improve the look of your house, but it also gives you the ability to relax and enjoy nights at home with the kids outside.  A creative way to make your front porch look rustic would be to use leftover split rail posts from your railing on your porch. Your options are endless!
