Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Kenton Tell of Kenton Fence Company (KF) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. As a Colorado Springs fence contractor that we do a lot of business with, we wanted to know more about how this company was started, what makes them unique and their goals for the future. RMFP: Thanks for your time, Kenton! We are really excited to get to know more about your company. Can you tell us how Kenton Fence Company got started?
KF: Sure, thanks for the opportunity to share about my business. I have been operating Kenton Fence Company for the past 4 years in the Colorado Springs area. Before that, I used to work as a manager for another local company. When we had a wind storm come through the area a few years ago, I found myself so busy with jobs that I decided to branch out on my own and pursue this full time.
RMFP: That’s great. Can you share a little about the services you offer and what makes your business unique?
KF: Yeah, we are mostly working with residential fencing currently. We offer cedar privacy fencing, ranch rail, split rail, vinyl and some other specialty cedar fencing. We do not currently offer any chain link or metal fencing. We pride ourselves in our attention to detail and since we are a smaller company, our turnaround is often quicker than larger operations. When you work with our company, you’re just dealing with me so there is not a risk of miscommunication about the job details.
RMFP: Perfect. How many employees do you have?
KF: Currently it’s just myself and I work with a couple of subcontractors.
RMFP: What areas do you service and what is your average turnaround time for a project?
KF: We service the Colorado Springs and Fountain area. Depending on the size of the project, we usually have jobs done within 2-3 days. We are very careful to not inconvenience the customer for a long duration of time, because we understand that it’s hard being displaced when you’re dealing with pets and children.
RMFP: That’s a very important consideration. What do you like most about working in this industry?
KF: I love being outdoors and having the freedom to work in a different place every day. I couldn’t work a 9-5 and be stuck indoors all of the time. Being in the construction industry since I was 19, I just love this way of life.
RMFP: Can you share what your hopes and goals are for your business in the future?
KF: I am hoping to grow and hopefully one day have people that are building for me and I can take on a different role within the company.
RMFP: Are you a Colorado Native and what do you do when you’re not working outdoors?
KF: Yes, I am a Colorado Springs native- so it’s great to be working in the same place where I was raised. In my free time, I love pursuing fitness and health, along with hiking and exploring Colorado.
