If a fence is on your list of home improvement projects, you’re sure to enjoy the added security and curb appeal. A fence will also lend privacy when you want to sunbathe or host a backyard BBQ—or simply read or think in solitude. They’re great for keeping unwanted critters out and pets and kids in.
Now that we’ve sold you on the benefits of a new fence, you may be wondering about the logistics—such as exactly when to install one. We asked a panel of professionals to share their opinions on timing. Here’s what they had to say.

Privacy and Safety
Obviously, you should build a fence if you have a sudden necessity for one. We had to build a fence when we got a new dog who needed lots of room to run off-leash. You may also need one if you want privacy from your neighbors, or if you want defined boundaries for your children when they’re outside playing.
But what I mainly want to talk about is adding a fence before you resell your home. Many homeowners specifically look for properties with fences, and they tend to be few and far between. This already helps you stand out and makes your home an ideal place for families with dogs or young children.
You can expect to pay $1,000 – $5,000 to install a fence, depending on the materials used and the amount of fencing needed. When all is said and done, you’ll recap about half of that in the added value to your home. So while you shouldn’t just add one to resell (unless your Realtor knows for a fact it will attract lots of buyers), it can be a great investment.
Autumn
In my opinion, autumn is the best time for setting up fences. There’s the right balance in sunlight and humidity that would help the wood. Also, autumn is the off-season for fence installation companies and so your installation would be at a lower cost.

Fall
Fall is definitely the best time to have your fence installed. In this season, fence installers usually have fewer clients so you won’t have to wait long before they visit your house. And with fewer clients, some offer discounts since they compete for customers during this time. Your lawn will also be easier to manage as cleaning and trimming will be easier. If installing a wooden fence, the sealant will also work much more rapidly.
