Wine tasting and the creation of wine is a unique and one of a kind process. The scents and tastes, surrounded by friends, engulfed in the history and all that it takes to create such a delicacy. Vineyards are known for being rustic and inspired by Tuscany, with a warm and welcoming environment. Let’s travel from Rocky Mountain Forest Product’s Denver location to southern Oregon, specifically Medford and visit 2Hawk Vineyard and Winery and see how they use reclaimed wood in their establishment.

About 2Hawk Vineyard and Winery

2Hawk is a vineyard and winery in Oregon that covers around 23.5 acres of vineyard. 2016 is when the first plantings took place. They produced about 1400 cases of wine and has since increased and is now in track to produce over 10,000 cases a year! Their blocks contain wines such as Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Merlot, and additional types of Chardonnay. Their soil is the most aged soil in Oregon, with an old stream bed running straight through the acres as well as daily visitors like ladybugs, barn owls, rabbits, and hawks. The owner, Ross, heavily monitors the moisture of the soil, the tension, and the wind speeds by incorporating modern day technology into the traditional ways of running and managing a vineyard.

The Wine Making

2Hawk winery has a precise way of doing things around their vineyard that may be different from others. They are very knowledgable about the layout of their grapes and how to know when they are at their full ripeness. They have tailored old winemaking with new winemaking to create a practice that is one of a kind. For example, their main difference is the different soil types. Each block of grapes in planted with specific soil dependent on the type of wine they are made into. Each block requires different techniques when it comes to managing it, and that is something that most vineyards don’t pay high attention too.

The Good Stuff

2Hawk produces and sells a wide selection of high-class reds, whites, and dessert wines. You can enjoy them at the vineyard and even purchase bottles to enjoy back home. They also have a wide array of food such as salads, cheeses, veggies,  and sandwiches that pair well with their selection of wines.

The Tasting Room

Their tasting room is decorated with a rustic and Tuscan feel, just as imagined with any vineyard and winery. Their tasting room is full of reclaimed wood furniture, fixtures, and accents that perfectly portray the feeling of Italy. Their flooring which is purely Douglas fir, ceiling made of Eastern Hemlock, and their wall and bar siding are all reclaimed wood that immediately makes the room cozy and warm. Their light fixtures are made of timbers which adds the perfect rustic touch, with furniture made from reclaimed and tables of barrels. Everything indoors and out is reclaimed wood. Their exterior has the curb appeal that instantly invites you in with a welcoming and appealing aesthetic. Their exterior siding is washed and distressed with posts and beams that run alongside the building to form a porch. All of the reclaimed wood they recovered is from old jobs and abandoned buildings, as well as the Douglas Fir which was from a mill demolish job just a few cities over in Oregon. All of the exterior materials get their unique washed and distressed look as they are from 1930, and were previously used at an abandoned structure for years and years.

Events

The vineyard holds events and gatherings often. You can find all of that information on their website, so you can join in and have some fun. They do tours of the vineyard during specific times, as well as private wine tastings with the winemaker himself. Added in between those events are cooking classes, bocce tournaments, wine pairing dinners, and much more!

2Hawk vineyard and winery has built its history within its walls. With the winemaking itself, events, and even the beautiful views- it for sure is a must visit on any bucket list. Perfect for a honeymoon, possible wedding, or even just a weekend away with family or friends. 2Hawk has brought history in with reclaimed wood and gave it a new meaning and purpose, while building a new history for years to come.
